BOOK: All city writers

all city writers

Looks promising! I just came across some pictures by wojofoto of the release of the book. I think I want to have this in my collection as well! According to the website: "The title ALL CITY WRITERS describes a vast research project on the writing movement, focussing particularly on the process of its exportation from New York to the whole of Europe during the 80s. International crews, fanzine networks, inter-rail travelling are, among others, key chapters in which writers have become protagonists.

The whole project developed from the consideration that many of the stories that writers experience are just lost in time. Other than the pictures of their pieces, the adventures, and sensations a writer lives through often just disappear like so many other bits of oral culture. For that reason, ALL CITY WRITTERS contains the largest contribution of texts ever published in this field.". Read more here

3669784423_c788f0941b_o

Remember we had a competition a while ago, which Pahnl from the UK won? Well unfortunately his prices got lost in the mail, and seeing we have no 'losing-books-in-the-mail' kinda money, it looked kinda sad. Luckily, our amazing friend Gary Shove from Untitled solved this problem by sending him Untitled II, the beautiful renaissance. So a big-up to Gary Shove and Untitled for delivering the well deserved price to our winner!

Untitled is,Without a doubt the most amazing series of street art books. A while ago Gary Shove from untitled offered to send us part one to see if we could do a write up, and we were blown away! Now part two truely shows that untitled is in it's own league. A full review will be posted soon, but first!

To the point, a 5GBP discount exclusively through CFYE! All you have to do is send us an e-mail at contact [at] cfye.com with 'untitled ii' in the subject or body, or register on crackforyoureyes.com before 24/12/2009, and we will make sure you will get your voucher code for the discount!!

Bookrelease: Stencil King from Hugo Kaagman

nieuwe_cover_kaagman

If there is one absolut pioneer in stencil art it's the Dutch Hugo Kaagman. Hugo has been active since the late '70's, displaying his life-size stencil art around Amsterdam. The last decades he has been painting from buildings 'till airplanes around the world. Today he held a book signing for the release of his book with the appropiate title 'Stencil King', released under Lebowski Publishers. The 160 page book is an amazing look in both history as current work of Kaagman. Some nice pics @ the book release by Wojofoto after the jump

New book: Art & Sound of the Bristol Underground

Art & Sound of the Bristol Underground Cover image

It only made sense that, as a terrible book geek, I'd make my first Crack post about a book. The folks over at Tangent Books, who brought the art world such fine tomes as Banksy's Bristol and Children of the Can, have just released a new volume, Art & Sound of the Bristol Underground.

Tangent's blurb goes like this:

Chris Burton and Gary Thompson have compiled a fascinating collection of flyers advertising secret parties on the Bristol circuit in the 80s and conducted a series of interviews with the people behind the leading hip hop crews of the day. The result is a book that covers an area in Bristol's (and the UK's) musical development that has never before been documented. Nothing seemed too daunting for the young DJs, MCs and rappers as they took over abandoned buildings, moved in the sound systems and partied all night long. The only publicity was word of mouth and flyers. Many of the artists behind the flyers such as FLX, Inkie and Nick Walker have gone on to gain national and international recognition while some of the crews have become music superstars.

Sounds cool, and the images that have been leaked around the blogosphere are pretty awesome examples of the kinds of flyers the kids today just don't get to see anymore. Not only are they drawn by some Bristol legends, they look to be done with markers and photocopied. Far from the polished stuff you see these guys putting in shows nowadays, this is them at the start.

The book itself is getting some nice media coverage (including stories of how the boxes of old flyers were found, which makes me think maybe I should check what all I've got in my attic!), and like anything happening in the Bristol scene right now, the book launch promises to be a pretty great night. With a new flyer by Inkie and some old school DJs, I think the Arnolfini'll be a kick ass party on 22 October.

Review Untitled - Streetart in the counter culture

untitled

Not too long ago, the good people from Untitled street art gave us the heads up about working on a new book: Untitled II, the beautiful renaissance. Seeing we didn't knew the first book yet, these kind people send us a complimentary copy of Untitled I - Street art in the counter culture. This week it finally came in, and we were more than surprised about the amazing quality of this book. Only fair if we give you lot a small taste.

We Were Here
we_were_here

Now these are the projects we dig! When we were browsing Mr. Zero's photostream we came across a post about him being featured in the 'we were here' book. Of course, any book featuring Mr. Zero deserves our attention! We took a leap over to their blog and where happily surprised to find a sweet book of 100+ pages filled with amazing street art images and a few interviews as well! The book is up for sale for 39$ and amazingly, downloadable for free in an 800mb PDF form as well! Please go check out their blog and love it. It is well visible they've put a whole lot of work into this book, so I urge you to buy it, or at least have a go @ the donate button instead of depleating your paypal account for porn again.
